Melissa's 2014 season ends with a high
Cornwall's paratriatlon star, Melissa Reid from Porthtowan, had another successful season racing at the highest level in the sport. In only her third year in paratriathlon, Melissa regained her World Aquathon title and finished second at the World Paratriathlon Championships; both races being held in Canada last month. The ambassador for the RLSB and Cornwall Sports Partnership also finished in silver at the European Champions that took place in Austria in July.
To top all of this off, Melissa managed to secure a win at the ITU Series event in Madrid, only a few weeks before the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced that Melissa's PT5 category will in fact be making its debut at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. With Melissa's current domination in the sport, she will be hoping for great success in Brazil in 2 years' time.
Melissa commented, "The season started off really well. My run was exactly where I needed it to be, my swim was strong and I felt good on the bike. I had a serious injury going into the Europeans, which meant I had to adapt my sessions so that I could finish the season well. I'm very happy to have competed this year and had some great results. My coach, Allan, and my guides have been a great support."
Melissa has literally travelled the world to race this year, in what is a very dedicated career path to follow. She has raced in Japan, London, Austria, Italy, Canada and Madrid. This could only be a possibility thanks to the devoted support of Melissa's supporters. Nissan Town and Country, based in Truro have come on board as a sponsor to help Melissa with her domestic transportation costs and Saucony, Mako wetsuits, Tank cycles, AMSport and Vorgee are all supporting Melissa with products for her racing and training. More local Cornish businesses have also been invaluable to Melissa's season, including Oliver Hughes Physiotherapy in Truro, At Your Pace in Helston and the Cornwall Sports Partnership.
Melissa said, "Classification going through to Rio is a dream come true my whole focus from now is that one day! It's been a tough year physically and mentally but that is what is going to make me so much stronger for next season! I hope to make everyone in Cornwall and the UK proud in the next few years"
