Cornwall School Games & the University of Exeter Inspire the Young People of Cornwall to Achieve their Personal Best
Cornwall Sports Partnership can confirm that the University of Exeter will again be the headline sponsor for the 2018 Cornwall School Games ensuring over 32,000 young people in Cornwall have access to competitive sport and involving over 6,000 young people in county festivals.
The games, this year held on the 29th June in Penryn, has been sponsored by the University of Exeter, which has two campuses in Cornwall - Penryn & Truro. Exeter signed a three-year deal with the Cornwall Sports Partnership (CSP) in January 2017 to enable more young people to be inspired by PE and school sport.
Ruth Grimmer from the University of Exeter said: "We're really proud to be part of this great initiative for young people in Cornwall and of the sheer number that are able to participate. Our research has shown that there are positive links between engagement in sport and academic achievement."
Both organisations hope this collaboration will inspire young people in Cornwall to be the very best they can be and to raise aspirations for those young people in education to consider university whether here in Cornwall or further afield.
In Cornwall, the School Games is delivered by schools, National Governing Bodies of Sport, Cornwall Sports Partnership, School Sport Networks and other local partners. Each year over 32,000 young people engage in an annual School Games programme to not only participate in competitive school sport but also to improve school attainment, emotional resilience and their health and wellbeing.
The Games also have a strong inclusive element resulting in more meaningful opportunities being available for young disabled and disengaged young people.
Tim Marrion, Cornwall School Games Manager from Cornwall Sports Partnership said: "We are extremely grateful to the University of Exeter for again agreeing to be our headline sponsor for the 2018 School Games. This is part of a long term partnership to raise the profile of the academic offer they have for young people to study in Cornwall and to enable the Cornwall School Games to provide even more young people with the opportunity to compete and achieve their personal best."
Working together the University, CSP and local School Games Organisers aim to make a clear and meaningful difference to the lives of even more young people through the School Games and this sponsorship along with the continued investment from Sport England into the national programme enables this partnership to achieve this ambition.
Richard Higginson, Senior Assistant Head at Newquay Tretherras School and Chair of the Cornwall Sport and PE Group also commented: "I am very pleased to hear of the news that the University of Exeter have committed to the 2nd year of funding for the Cornwall School Games. It is such a vital partnership, not just financially, as it raises the profile of Higher Education opportunities to the young people of Cornwall right here on their doorstep. The fact the University, with its national sporting recognition, wishes to continue to work with both the Cornwall Sport Partnership and all the schools in Cornwall, to ensure together we provide top class competitive sport to the young people of Cornwall in our best facilities, demonstrates the strong link between physical activity, healthy minds, sportsmanship and academic success which are the foundations to successful young people in our communities and beyond."
Over 4000 competitors will be taking part in the Cornwall School Games Summer Finals Day which this year will be jointly hosted by Penryn College and the Penryn Campus on Friday 29th June 2018.
