Cornwall Disability Active Forum
This month, Cornwall Sports Partnership and disAbility Cornwall & Isles of Scilly hosted the inaugural meeting of the Cornwall Disability Active Forum, with a view to ensuring people with a long term limiting health condition or a disability are involved in, and can access sport and physical activity either as a participant, coach or a volunteer.
Jane Johnson from disAbility Cornwall said: "we are delighted to be working with the CSP and Forum members to reduce inequalities in leisure and sport, develop more opportunities and to collectively encourage more people to lead active and healthy lives, regardless of age or ability".
Forums are a great way to reach people and have a wider impact and lots of areas in the country have them to focus on their own local needs. They connect people, enable a coordinated approach and the combining of resources to achieve more.
Cornwall Sports Partnership and the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) gave presentations on the Cornwall Physical Activity Strategy, their work and their research which we can use to develop the Forum and its focus. Cornwall's Physical Activity Strategy has a target of 50,000 more people active by 2020 and people with a disability are a priority.
Statistics show seven in ten disabled people have not taken part in any physical activity in the last month, compared to five in ten non-disabled people, and they claim that either not knowing about opportunities or a lack of available activities is what prevents them from taking part.
The EFDS strategy, based on sound research illustrates friendship and connections, health, progressing in life, mental strength and wellbeing, having fun, feeling free, and family and support systems, are the individual outcomes achieved through engagement in physical activity.
Another forum will be set for 6 to 8 weeks' time.
Anyone is welcome to join the Forum membership, whether an individual or organisation and we will be sure to keep them up to date with our work. If you represent an organisation and would like to attend future meetings or telephone in to them, then please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
