Meet Charlotte Banfield who is an 18 year old female Cornwall College student.
Charlotte is a Special Olympics Cornwall basketball player who plays weekly, rarely missing a session.
Charlotte's confidence to interact with new people has improved immensely since she has been with us at SOC on the LD Active Kernow programme and Charlotte attended the National Summer Games in 2017 in Sheffield as a member of the Basketball team.
Charlotte attends lots of social groups outside of SOC and is going to Exeter University, Falmouth as a result of her improved confidence and social skills.
When asked what the Special Olympics means to her, Charlotte says: "I really like coming to the sessions, I come to Basketball and some of the Saturday ones to. It's nice to play sport without worrying about what people think about me and without any pressure to be totally amazing at it."
Social impact - Charlotte now lives unsupported in her own flat, this may not have been a direct result of becoming a Special Olympic Athlete but it definitely contributed to giving Charlotte the confidence to do so. Charlotte has made some really good friends through Special Olympics and organises social events like going to see Plymouth Raiders Basketball Team.
