Liz used to be involved in team sports when she was at school but did not continue with it. Over the last few years she has got the bug back and has since attended a netball local activator course back in October 2016, which lead on to her setting up a Netball Local pay & play sessions in Saltash with the support of the Cornwall Sports Partnership. She is passionate about encouraging women to become more active and wants to show that it can absolutely be lots of fun, and you can get fit alongside making new friends and having a laugh.

"I used to be heavily involved in team sports when I was at school but as time went on, this dropped. However, a couple of years ago I joined a running club with some old work colleagues. This reinvigorated my exercise bug and when I moved to my latest work role, I decided to set up a Sports Committee, as I wanted others to get the benefits of exercise that I had gained. This led me to attending a funding event hosted by the Cornwall Sports Partnership (CSP) and finding out about the opportunity to become a Netball Activator through the ThisGirlCan-Coach programme.
I attended the training back in October and was surprised how much some of my old netball knowledge came flooding back! Thinking about leading a group of ladies from the general public was nerve wracking and would push me outside of my comfort zone; but the training and supporting materials provided by CSP were brilliant and gave me everything I needed.
Before my first session, I worried about no one turning up, too many people turning up and whether I would be good enough. I had a great turn out at the first session in Saltash and it's the feedback from some of the ladies who attend that really make it worth it. For some of them it's the only time they get to themselves through the week and they cherish the opportunity to have some 'me' time, whilst getting fitter and having fun! Our session isn't all that serious - we regularly have ladies forgetting which lines are which and where they can and can't go on the court, but for us, it's not about sticking to the rules, it's about getting more exercise and having that social element that playing in a team can bring.
I'm so pleased I took this step with the Cornwall Sports Partnership as I'm loving having the opportunity to get more ladies playing netball in my home town and it's absolutely reminded me how much I love the sport...so much so that I've also signed up to play in a team again myself. My next aim is to complete the Level 1 Netball Coaching qualification and keep developing both in leading and playing the sport.
I'm really excited to become a This Girl Can Coach as I'm passionate about encouraging women to become more active and want to show that it can absolutely be lots of fun and you can get fit alongside making new friends and having a laugh! I've been personally able to do this through the gig rowing and netball clubs I've joined and I really enjoy the social aspect of these sports, as well as seeing my body tone up and notice my fitness improving. Through my This Girl Can role, I hope to encourage other women to do the same through finding something they enjoy so that getting fit doesn't feel like a chore."
"I love coming to netball on a Tuesday; it's a great hour of running about, learning about the game and keeping fit all with a lovely bunch of ladies. It's great fun!"
"Could you do this more than once a week, as it's fun and doesn't feel like exercise but is getting me fit?"
If any women are thinking about giving something a go but aren't sure if it's for them, I'd encourage you to give one of the Cornwall Sports Partnership pay and play sessions a try - you've nothing to lose (apart from some sweat) and potentially new friends and greater fitness to gain!
