Hip & Knee Surgeon
What skills & experience do you bring to the CSP Board?
I'm a hip and knee surgeon working and living in Cornwall, interested in the role that physical activity plays in improving our health and well-being.
As an advisory board member I hope to help strengthen the links between our health services and the amazing network of Cornish clubs and organisations that support us all to get active and keep moving.
Tell us a little bit about yourself:
Newport born and bred, I trained as a medic in South Wales, Australia, South Africa, Canada and the South West before settling down as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Cornwall & Duchy Hospital in 2010 (see here for more info).
I cherished my team sport growing up, playing rugby for the legendary Cardiff Meds RFC in college and making some life long friends along the way. I've since dabbled in triathlon and last year, as I very much passed 'over the hill'(!), ran a sub 3hr marathon in Frankfurt.
Co-founder of the web-based My Clinical Outcomes system that enables patients, doctors and hospitals to measure, monitor and improve health over time. Having published over 30 research papers, we used this technology last year to show how physical activity improved pain and function for a group of patients with arthritis.
What do you like to do in your free/spare time?
More recently I've enjoyed running with friends, with Cornwall Athletic Club and have been lucky enough to be part of the team bringing parkrun to Trelissick National Trust gardens.
A bacon sandwich and coffee with friends after a 9am parkrun on a Saturday morning is the perfect start to any weekend!
